about

For those of you with doubts about the future of modern jazz trombone, let G-Rays by David Gibson assuage your fears. The new CD from this New York based jazz musician is a fresh and exciting set of three originals and five standards.

Trombonist, composer and arranger David Gibson, who has been heard with Slide Hampton's World of Trombones and the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Big Band, is accompanied by a cast of like minded, and similarly gifted, young musicians with whom he has put together another zesty, meaty recording. The three horn line-up - trombone, trumpet, and tenor saxophone - makes for a rich and full-bodied front line. The rhythm section keeps the music swinging and the ballads properly brooding.

Gibson shows that a personal quest can be shared, inclusive, and enriching for everyone. This is the type of set that can easily be enjoyed by fans of the best mid-'60s Blue Note dates by people like McCoy Tyner and Wayne Shorter.

“The impetus for this project was my desire to stave off the creative shiftlessness I feared was on the horizon. It quickly morphed into my musical attempt to have some fun. The tunes presented here have been some of my favorites dating back to my youth. I can remember hearing “This Guy’s in Love with You” on the radio as a kid. As my ears were first becoming attuned to the jazz experience, a friend put “Roots” in my stereo and thus began my sincere adoration of the music and its musicians. Curtis Fuller, Slide Hampton and J.J. Johnson settled into my psyche, but I have always been attracted to the brash creativity of Woody Shaw. Woody’s influence on me is represented here by his composition, “Sweet Love of Mine”, but also by Larry Willis’ “To Wisdom, the Prize” and my attempt to channel his energy, “Reflection”.
Within a few weeks, the music was ready. Within a few hours, the performances were documented. No heady agendas were present. We just got together for a few hours … we made some music … we ate some sushi … and we had some fun. The result was “G Rays”.”
